What are BCAA’s

Branched-chain amino acids, or BCAA’s, are three essential amino acids that our body’s need. However, we do not naturally produce them and instead must source them through our diets.

Protein, the vital macronutrient, is made up of the nine essential amino acids. BCAA’s are made up of three – leucine, isoleucine and valine. Our food, such as chicken, beef, salmon and eggs, contain BCAA’s, which make up around 40 per cent of our body’s amino acid demands.

What do BCAA’s do?

Branched chain amino acids are a key part of protein synthesis as they’re part of the main building blocks of protein itself. As such, consuming additional BCAA gives your body additional amino acids to aid in its natural protein synthesis.

BCAA supplements are free form, meaning they can bypass the digestive processes of food-based BCAA and enter your bloodstream faster.

When should you take BCAAs

BCAA’s are best taken intra-workout, or shortly before a workout.

How to take BCAA’s

BCAA’s are generally available in pill or powder form. We suggest mixing 6 grams with 200ml of water and consuming up to 3 times daily. Crucially, BCAA’s are effective when taken mid-workout so can be consumed with water during your session.

Maximuscle’s BCAA 3000 is a BCAA supplement that offers a high quality ratio of Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine in grapefruit or Apple & Pear. If you like the sound of BCAA supplementation, head to our shop to buy.
