What is Beta-Alanine?

Just like Creatine before it, Beta-alanine has jumped up in the popularity stakes in recent years, with an ever-increasing body of research dedicated to exploring the benefits of its supplementation. Maximuscle explain why Beta-Alanine is the new kid on the block when it comes to sports supplements.

Metabolism

During demanding exercise, our cells metabolism will increase in order to ramp up energy production to power physical movements. As metabolic activity increases the build-up of lactic acid in the muscles can increase, which can contribute to fatigue.

There are two main metabolic pathways that power energy during exercise; aerobic and anaerobic. The aerobic pathway requires oxygen and is the predominant pathway supplying energy during longer, more sustained activity. As oxygen is delivered to the working muscles via the blood, carbon dioxide and hydrogen are exchanged as a waste product of metabolism. Over time, as carbon dioxide and hydrogen levels build up the blood can become more acidic.

During higher intensity exercise, the body will principally employ the anaerobic pathway which doesn’t rely on oxygen to produce energy. The bi-product of this pathway; lactic acid, will build up and can subsequently shift the pH of the blood to a more acidic environment.

Beta-Alanine and Carnosine

Beta-Alanine is a non-essential beta amino acid that is naturally produced in the liver. When combined with the amino acid Histidine, Beta-Alanine is synthesised to form Carnosine within the muscles. Carnosine is naturally produced within the body and helps to ‘buffer’ or remove hydrogen irons that accumulate during high intensity exercise such as weight lifting, helping to control intracellular pH.
