Protein & Weight Loss

Most people associate protein with men and big muscles but is this reality. Let’s face it; we’ve consumed protein virtually every day since we were born and it hasn’t made us grow large in size, so what is protein really used for and why shouldn’t you be afraid of it.

What Is Protein

Protein is an essential nutrient that makes up 40% of our body (in the absence of water). As we can’t store protein in our body, we dependent on consuming protein every day from a variety of sources like chicken, beef or beans as part of a healthy balanced diet to support our body.

How Much Do You Need

The UK Food Standards Agency recommends that an adult consumes 0.8g of protein per kg of body weight per day, meaning someone weighing 65Kg would eat 52g per day, although this amount may increase the busier our lifestyle becomes.

Why Use Protein

What a lot of people don’t realise is protein supports muscle retention. This is due to the fact that muscle tissue supports a higher natural metabolism compared to someone of a similar shape with lower levels.

A high metabolism can make it easier to achieve a negative energy balance, which is required to lose weight and tone up. A negative energy balance is where you use more energy per day than you consume through food or drink, meaning controlling our calorie intake will also help.
