Tom Rees - Q&A

I started playing rugby aged 12, when I started secondary school in Basingstoke, and soon joined the local rugby club. Progressing through the age groups, I have played for England 16s, 18s, 19s 21s 7s and Saxons, before getting my first full Cap in the 2007 6 nations. I joined London Wasps in 2003 aged 18 and am now in my 5th season at the club.

If you hadn't played rugby what would you have done?

I think I might like to have been a doctor, but didn't realise this until a couple of years ago, so not sure what I would have done if rugby hadn't come about.

What's been the highlight of your career so far?

Winning the Heiniken cup with Wasps in 2007 and my first England start against France.

What do you enjoy doing on your days off?

Big movie fan, and have about 200 DVDs, and enjoy computer games so quite like a fairly chilled out day off, but do enjoy go karting as well.

What has been the toughest part of your sporting career so far?

I suffered a series of quite nasty injuries over the course of about a year, with the shortest lay off I had being 7 1/2 weeks. They all seemed to come one after the other. It was pretty difficult to keep motivated during that time.

How do you stay relaxed and focused when the pressure is on?

I've got a fair amount of self belief, and this is born out of the hard work done on the training pitch and in the gym, and when things get heated its just question of staying calm and remembering that I've done the work that should see me through.

What do you do to stay motivated?

Try and stay injury free!

What does your weekly training programme consist of?

Weights which can be strength, hypertrophy or power based depending on the time of the week or the phase we're in, rugby sessions that are up to an hour but are pretty intense and conditioning work that replicates what we go through in the game.

What do you concentrate on when training in the gym?

Trying to get quality out of the work I do, it's not always about the amount of weight you lift but the way you lift it.

Which Maximuscle products do you use regularly?

Recovermax, Viper Active, Promax, Sports Vitamin and Immune Support.

What are your favourite Maximuscle products and why

GH Kick helps with a good night's sleep and feeling fresh in the morning.

Finally, what tips would you pass on to our readers who are looking to achieve their sporting and physique goals

Always have a clear idea of what you want to get out of your training, its easy to have loads of great ideas and goals, but without a clear focus on how to get their chances are that you never achieve any of them to the level you could do.
