I can honestly say that the 12-week challenge that I've just completed was the most exhilarating and exciting period of my life.
Before accepting the challenge, I had never stood in a gym, and to be truthful - the thought of exercise and torturing my body with weights didn't register in my mind as fun!
I preferred the easy route - eating crap, partying to all hours, drinking, smoking, and basically abusing my body.
It all started when I was dragged into a gym in Belfast by my friend Kevin, who was into football training. Throughout the training session I felt so paranoid. In comparison to those around me, my arms were like sticks, a bird had thicker legs, and the size of my stomach resembled that of a pregnant mother. It was at this stage that I told myself, "Peter, you have taken it too far, and you're on the road to ruin".
A few days later I returned, this time on my own, and felt so self-conscious, I basically did one lap, walked back out the door, changed and headed for my car.
On the way there I said to myself "If you get into this car, you have lost the will to win, you have given up before you have even tried. Either you turn back now, and give it a chance, or be content to be a loser"!
So turning on my heel, I went straight back in the doors again and confronted my doubts!
About three weeks into my new found sport, I noticed an ad for Maximuscle products in a magazine, and to my delight saw that there was an outlet in Ballymena - Reps Gym. At that time I was teaching in Ballymena, so I called round and met the owner, a guy called Robert. I told him my situation, and he set about creating a new diet for me, eliminating the junk and packing in some good proteins and carbohydrate, to reduce the amount of body fat I was carrying. I was given Max-Meal, Ribomax and Promax to supplement my new diet.
At this stage I new it was up to me, and me alone, to make the change. I was given the supplements, and the new diet required, so I set about my 12-week challenge that was advertised in my Gym. Basically, you had 12 weeks to make as much visible change to your body. The winner was simply the one with the most change.
There were constant temptations around me - sweets, alcohol, and cigarettes. The good part, though, was around week six. Just when I thought I could take no more, people started coming up to me in the gym and saying, "Peter, you have lost a hell of a lot of weight".
I couldn't see the changes being made to myself. People in the neighbourhood started talking, and the next I knew, I was being accused of being on steroids from those in the gym that were training for years but never made any progress! Yes, you know the ones - they sit and talk their way through their workout, eat practically anything, and then wonder why they don't grow!
These comments fuelled my training, and before long both my diet and training were near perfect. I find that with bodybuilding, you are always learning no matter what level. It's down to you and what your body responds to, as what works for someone else will not work for you. It's all about training with passion, and not just performing your reps and sets for the sake of it, but performing them with your mind, as well as your body.
Feeling the muscle group working, keeping the movement slow and controlled, and the breathing perfect. To me, that is the key to growth in the gym, and as regards growth outside of the gym, that involves a perfect diet, loads of rest and recovery - that's it.
In the last six weeks of my 12-week program, I changed my diet, cutting down on the amount of carbs being consumed and increasing the protein. I also supplemented my diet further with Guggul Complex and Thermobol, which aids fat loss, and never ate after 6pm in the evening. I would always take a double Promax at bedtime to fuel my body with protein throughout the long night ahead.
There is no doubt that my life has completely changed. My friends are all envious of me, and many have asked for my training regime. I do give it to them but I know that there is no point in following it unless you change your lifestyle and eating habits.
Training is only a stimulus for growth. It's the remaining 23 hours of the day, where recovery and diet play the key part in growth and body change. Unless you really want to make the change and are prepared to do anything to accomplish that change, there is no point in trying, as you will only be disappointed.
If you want to strengthen your heart, you can do this by going for a long walk or jog. But if you wish to change the way you look and feel - you must change your life, your habits, and your beliefs.
Looking back, I was extremely fortunate to have met up with Robert and discovered Maximuscle supplements so soon into my training, as I feel I was given the best chance right from the start to make amends.
Someone once described bodybuilding tome as an "invisible sport", because it is not recognised by the public as a sport that requires continual effort and dedication inside and outside of the gym, and worst still, visible progress to the individual remains invisible for weeks on end!
In my opinion that is why so many people fail to achieve results, as they simply want instant change. Their ideas are clear, but their mind and willpower is blurred somewhat. My advice is to use quality Maximuscle supplementation, and train consistently for 12 weeks. Never miss a workout and never give up trying. If you fail, and we all do, start again there and then. No, not in a day or in a weeks time - now! That's how progress is made.
To me that is the key to change ,and I do not look back with any doubts as to what I've missed out on. What exactly have I missed? My life has changed and changed for the better. I now live life to the full and give my body the respect that it deserves.
I don't smoke or drink anymore. I have an improved sense of well-being and self-confidence, and a future that will bring more weeks and years of perfecting my body for life.
Why would one change that?
