Life-changing stories - what an inspiration your team is

Dear Maximuscle,

Just looking through the latest edition of "Muscular Performance" by Scientic Publications. I often read it when I'm in my bed because its a very good, easy to read and I feel inspired by the letters and stories. After a read, I often say to myself when I put the magazine down, "Its time to change my ways". So I start to watch what I eat and take a bit more exercise, but it does not last. A couple of days later, I am back to the way I was before. I have been receiving your magazine for the last two years and I am on issue eight now and this happens all the time. I work in the paper industry and the shifts are 12 hour night shift and a day shift, but I do get "rest days", I always find an excuse to be lazy. There was a time last October when I had two weeks holiday, so I said to myself, "its time to change my ways" Well I believed I did, I started going to the local sports centre the two weeks I was off. I watched what I ate, and started eating lots of bananas and vegetables, I also went and bought supplements from a well known store, the supplements were in powder form that had to be mixed with milk. Now, I went to the sports centre Monday through to Saturday, for one hour per day and had Sunday off. The fitness room had everything you would expect, exercise bike, rowing machine, mechanical lifting equipment etc. The supplements were cheap it was all I could afford. After about a week with the supplements I started to get pissed off by the messing around I had to do with the blender and sometimes-lumpy mixture I had to drink. There was a lack of instructions on the packaging, but plenty of information about the contents, just what you wanted to hear.

At these times you just think to yourself "is it all worth it?" On the second week I decided I was not doing myself any favours so I stopped smoking, I had been smoking since I was thirteen years old. The pressure was now on, going to the sports centre, trying to stick to the supplements, staying motivated and staying off the fags. By Wednesday I started to feel tired and bored and I would finish my routines easier. I also started running short of money because it cost me 2.50 for an hour, it soon mounts up if you go every day. On Thursday I went along to the fitness room as usual, started with a short jog on the tread mill then the bike, by this time I started to really sweat. Twenty minutes had gone by, I was now on the mechanical weights, suddenly I started to become dizzy, so I stopped what I was doing and sat down for a while. It continued to get worse, to the point where I had to leave the fitness room and head for the lockers. I sat for a while then suddenly I ran to the toilet to be sick but nothing happened. I just wanted to close my eyes so I lay down on the wooden bench next to the lockers for a while. I did leave the sports centre eventually but for the rest of the day I felt crap and so exhausted. I felt exhausted for a few days after that, I did not feel that I enjoyed my time off. There are lessons to be learnt here, firstly do not buy the supplements that go all lumpy and you have to mix with milk. Secondly, don't over do it. I did and looked what happened, I believe I burned myself out.

The things I have learned just from reading "Muscular Performance" is that "Rome was not built in a day" and building a perfect body takes time and determination.

I personally lack these qualities and need some help, I am 6ft, 98kgs, 30 years old. I have started cycling and have bought a few of your smaller products and I was very impressed, I have started to lay some money aside so I can order stuff from you. In 2001, I am going to make an effort and start again with trying to stay fit, I want in the end to be well built with less fat and more muscle. On a positive note, I am still off the fags, best thing I ever did. At the end of the day I believe information and communication is vitally important to everyone who is interested in sporting activities, and believe that "Muscular Performance" is providing that to everyone.

Thank you

Jon Haddon
