The following true story is a remarkable account of what you can achieve whatever your age and circumstances. You're never to old to get into shape and capture the youth, that we seem to miss, when responsibilities and the pressures of life get us down...
The John Massey story:I never liked sports of any sort when at school and didn't play football unless forced to. I left school at 16 in 1958, taking up an apprenticeship with the National Coal Board. At that time I had no transport to work, which was about twelve miles from home, so I bought a bicycle, I was a little overweight in my early teens, but I noticed that regular cycling made me leaner and fitter. At the age of 25 I bought a bullworker. I used it every day and became quite impressed with the results. Continuing with the bullworker, I also took up jogging, becoming very lean with small defined muscles. Still using the bullworker I entered and completed the Stoke on Trent Marathon, which gave me considerable satisfaction. By now I had started to work for British Steel Plc. Carrying on the same routine of cycling, running, and exercising with the bullworker. I was fit but only weighed about nine and a half stone. Until this time, I had never touched weights, as it was considered a little bit anti-social.
One day in 1993, at the age of 50, a colleague at work arranged a corporate membership through the works welfare scheme at the local gym. With the combination of cycling and weight training, I quickly noticed an improvement in my physique. I soon became hooked on weight training. By this time, I had persuaded my wife to also join the gym with me, so we could train together and motivate each other. At this time I was taking no supplements, not even protein powder. I did not understand about nutrition. I started to buy body building books and magazines and thanks to all the contradictions and confusing information, I started training four times a week and became guilty of doing all the usual silly things such as two-hour workouts, using bad form, etc. I was then advised that taking a protein powder would be wise and would ensure far better results. As I did not know what protein was best, I just took any cheap and nasty protein that I came across.
As I was taking protein, I thought that training six days a week would get even better results. So I went on a 6 day routine, hitting each body part twice a week, cycled to work and back every day and managed to do thirty minutes a day on the stepper. What a mistake! I soon found that not only was I was getting nowhere, I was on the verge of going backwards and I had stomach upsets from the cheap protein. I was ten stone and not progressing - Action was needed.
Some time later I saw an advert for Maximuscle in a magazine and decided to use their Promax. With the comprehensive booklets and advice I was given. I took 1 gm of protein per pound of body weight and cut my training sessions down to 3 days a week, lasting around 45 - 60 mins. I stopped eating junk food and with all this advice, the results really started to show. I found the Promax, easy to mix, great tasting and I found no stomach upsets with it.
I have learnt to cycle my supplements to ensure I get constant results, as I found this stops the body getting used to them. I recently purchased Maximuscle's Cyclone, which really impressed me, as I noticed a difference within two weeks. My muscles became fuller and harder, and since using Promax and Cyclone, my weight jumped up to 11.5 stone, with even less bodyfat. That's nearly 1.5 stone in 3 years at 56 years of age. I regularly use 3 scoops of Promax, daily, and take Cyclone on a one-month on, one month off basis. To ensure peak immune system and recovery, I also use Maximuscle's Protrient. At 56 years of age, my physique (completely natural) is similar to someone half my age. My motivation is fuelled by the changes I notice in the mirror and the challenge of pushing myself, regardless of what society dictates is not right for my age! No one is too old to train smart, eat good food, and take good supplementation.
I find that training 3 days a week, means I can recover and build muscle and strength, whilst feeling great. My wife still trains with me and at 43 is in great shape also. We've made training an important part of our life and it is reflected in the way we feel and look. There really is no excuse not to train, if you want to find the time, you can. Using weights, it only takes 1 hour, 3 times a week. The results are not only a well-toned body with less body fat, but a completely different healthy and positive outlook on life. When you look good, you give out a confident attitude to others and feel positive within. I am sure that if everyone kept fit, lifted weights and did some cardiovascular work, most people of my age, would have no need for doctors and wouldn't suffer half the illness or problems they do.
"Train hard, rest well, eat correctly and live life to the full".
