George Brann Snr | Maximuscle Life changing stories

Dear Maximuscle,

I am really hoping to feature in your Web page for several reasons:

  1. So that others can see what can be achieved by normal people
  2. So I can receive a voucher to start ordering from Maximuscle and can buy some of your fantastic protein bars.

The events that change our lives

We all can look back at the moments in our lives that have changed and moulded our future. I have to take you back to when I was in the Royal Navy. During my time, I served in the Cod war, Falklands War and the Gulf Sea conflict escorting ships. I was at sea eating the wrong things working endless hours at a desk with no exercise and drinking alcohol, with at times tons of stress. The Armed Forces used this as a socially expectable way of relaxing - yes I suffered from progressive obesity, putting on a few pounds a year.

In no time, I was 14 stone and at 5' 7" that was bad news, my body mass index was over 25. I was clinically obese. The first change came when I had an abscess that required surgery. I decided to change my life style and change my diet. Yes I lost weight, I got down to 9 stone 8 pounds, but as I know now wrongly. I remember being cold in the winter and when doing gardening saying to my wife "I was much stronger when I was fatter" I left the Navy in 1992, this allowed me to control my own diet and food intake.

I realise now all my muscle mass had been lost. I stayed lean with little muscle mass doing very fast long swimming twice a week. This continued until I had a motor bike accident and broke my left elbow badly 5 years ago. The brake was extensive and the prognosis poor, the consultants diagnosis was very little movement if any in the joint. This was unacceptable to me so I started on the long journey of recovery.

I rocked my arm until it gave 1 or 2 inches at a time - I eventually achieved (very painfully) almost a straight arm but extremely weak and painful. I added cod liver oil tablets to my food supplements; my mother-in-law had a set of 9-pound vinyl dumb bells. I was given these to use, which I did 7 days a week! I did sit ups and press-ups. Again, I realise now that exercising 7 days a week is incorrect.

Soon the vinyl dumb bells were too light. I was gaining no more muscle so I invested in some metal dumb bells. This was the start to my massive body transformation. I started reading everything I could about bodybuilding and nutrition and continued to add weights and change my diet. At the end of 2001 I purchased a solid Tricep Bar and started to use protein powder.

I do my exercises in a very small area at home between furniture in only an 8' x 6' space. I use the Tricep Bar to do most exercises, its surprising how you can modify a piece of equipment. My body weight is now 68.5 kg. I can arm curl 62 kg and squat 66 kg - now you might think this squat is not impressive however in order to do this I have to clean and jerk the bar off the floor and lower it to my neck. It's quite a complex movement. I even use the Tricep Bar to dead lift, I am currently up to 88.5 kg.

I am constantly adding small weight gains and I am getting stronger and stronger. I even use a 10 kg weight plate to do one of my abdominal exercises. It is esential to keep an exercise diary as it tells me what was my maximum weight and alerts me to stagnation in weight gain.

Unlike many amateurs, I actually like reading as much as I can; I use exercises which areappropriate to my body type and home use. I learn about diet, recovery and throw away informationwhich appears to be contradicting the general trend, or I feel is incorrect. I now eat a lot morecomplex carbs; I have increased my protein intake. Taking protein powder every night and a tin oftuna during the day. I eat steak twice a week but remove all fat off the meat. I have introducedginseng and glucosamine sulphate to my supplements. I have had to purchase a better quality wheypowder, as I do not tolerate lactose or milk.

One of the problems with food supplements is that the companies do not flag up the reactions they can cause. Ginseng is one of the greatest dietary supplements available but can cause hypertension in women and increased menstrual bleeding. Maximuscle always tells you about their food supplements.

I have more strength, more muscle and more energy than I ever have had and my resting pulse is 46. I am 44 years of age this year and feel like an 18-year-old. My nutritional knowledge has enabled me to stimulate my body in ways I had not realised I could do.

I get my high on exercise and have done so much. Even if you have only a home environment and simple weight equipment you can do an impressive bodybuilding programme. Do not ever think you cannot fully recover from a serious injury - do not believe everything doctors tell you and mostimportantly do not think you are ever too old. Bodybuilding can be your vehicle to recovery, fitness and strength. Maximise your muscle growth with Maximuscle!

I know I did - I am continuing and who knows where the journey will take me!
