Raised within a stone's throw from Franklin's Gardens, Courtney is a true local Northampton boy.He is another member of the Saints Academy off the famed production line of Northampton Old Scouts.

In the 2008–09 season Courtney played in the Guinness Premiership, the EDF Energy Trophy and the European Challenge Cup, He established a reputation for making huge tackles, notably against Montpellier and in the final of the ECC Tournament against Bourgoin.
Courtney started thinking about rugby seriously when he was 16 and was the only member of the England Under 20 squad that reached the final of the IRB Junior World Championship in Japan in June 2009 to be chosen for the Saxons’ squad the following month.
Further promotion followed to the England elite squad the following autumn. He made his England debut as a replacement on November 7 in the 18–9 defeat against Australia at Twickenham.Courtney’s first start came against New Zealand in 2010. He continued in the starting line up for the rest of the series against Australia, Samoa and South Africa scooping the Investec man of the series.
At club level, Courtney’s form continued as he played an integral part of the Northampton’s Heineken Cup run, reaching the final but narrowly losing out to a strong Leinster side.
Courtney’s physical presence around the pitch is the culmination of hard work and dedication. A lot can be attributed to Northampton’s Strength and Conditioning team who work thoroughly with each player.
