Maximuscle help fuel Saints to Victory in the Powergen Challenge Cup Final
Saturday-26th August 2006 will be remembered by St.Helen's as the day they won their first piece of silver ware for 2006, by playing a truly magnificent game against the Huddersfield Giants at Twickenham, with a seven-try victory which saw the final score board reading Saints 42-Huddersfield 12 seeing them claim their fifth Challenge Cup Trophy in just 11 years and winning it for the second time since partnering up with Maximuscle, who are the team's 'Official Sports Nutrition and drinks suppliers'
Not content with one piece of Silver ware, Saints very own Sean Long who played a very strong and determined game throughout was deservedly named Lance Todd winner for a record third time for his 'Man of the Match' showing, but he would also be the first to say that their victory had been down to a brilliant team performance, who's only thoughts throughout were to bring this famous trophy back to St.Helen's and that is exactly what they did!
After a rather worrying start, which saw Huddersfield take command of the ball right from kick off, it was an agonising wait of more than eight minutes until the Saints finally got hold of the ball in the Giant's half. After the Saints first change which saw Great Britain's second-rower Lee Gilmour replacing Jon Wilkin, the game soon heated up, as it developed into an exciting tussle with both teams matching each other tackle for tackle, but it was the Saints who landed the next scoring blow, sending the Giants a warning that they were going all out to win and no-one was going to stop them!
At the second half, already six points ahead a very different Saints team emerged. They were refreshed, determined and out to finish the job in hand and the result of this was seen on the pitch immediately. As the second half got under way, the Saints continued their impressive form of power, drive and energy, making them increasingly dangerous to the Giants who quickly began to fade, as the devastating attacking form of the Saints soon finally ended any hopes of a Giants comeback.
Soon the Saints fans were celebrating; their wish had been answered and the Challenge Cup was coming home, which also saw the Saints racking up their highest-ever score in a Challenge Cup Final.
Jon Wilkin bagged two tries while Jamie Lyon finished with 18 points thanks to a try and seven conversions.
