Josh Lewsey

Lewsey was born in Bromley in Kent and grew up in Hertfordshire, where he attended Watford Grammar School for Boys. He played for the Amersham and Chiltern Rugby Football Club. He joined Wasps at eighteen and played for their Colts side and was under-21 captain. He played for Bristol whilst attending Bristol University to study physiology and chemistry, and rejoined Wasps at the age of twenty-one after completing his studies.

He won his first England cap on the 'Tour from Hell' in 1998, and also appeared in all three tests in the 2001 North American tour. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2001, having uniquely combined the commissioning course with full time professional sport. He served for two years as an officer in the British Army, before having to leave to concentrate on International rugby duties. After leaving the Army, however, he did find time to complete a Post-Graduate in Law with an eye for potential work with the Bar.

He made his England home-debut in the Six Nations Championship in 2003 , during which he scored twice in a 40–5 win over Italy, winning man of the match and securing a first team spot. As an invaluable member of the Wasps team, Josh has helped win 10 trophies in 10 years with the club. He has won every trophy possible on domestic and international levels, the latest being the Heineken European Cup 2007.

Josh Lewsey - Q&A

If you hadn't played rugby what would you have done?

I would have probably carried on my Army career.

What's been the highlight of your career so far?

Being selected for and playing with the Lions... The World Cup win. Winning 2 Heineken Cup trophies with Wasps.

Who are your heroes, and why? (sporting or otherwise)

Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Prince Charles, and Jeremy Clarkson. I admire them as they follow their convictions and say what they believe in, regardless of criticism. They represent a part of Britain that is honourable and traditional.

What do you enjoy doing on your days off?

I enjoy spending time outdoors with my 2 boxer dogs, Wyn and Olaf, and taking part in country sports. I also enjoy spending time at the coast and surfing.

What has been the toughest part of your sporting career so far?

Handling the political aspects involved in progressing in any industry.

How do you stay relaxed and focused when the pressure is on?

I enjoy the pressure and so that is what keeps me focused.

What do you do to stay motivated?

I am driven by my own performance. I have never played a perfect game and never will do, so I am motivated to achieve the best I can and prepared to work towards it, whatever it takes.

What do you concentrate on when training in the gym?

Some days I naturally have more energy than others, so I concentrate on good nutrition to maintain a good level to enable me to continue with training and not become stale.

Which Maximuscle products do you use regularly?

The protein is most important, yet the most difficult to find in a useful form elsewhere and is not available otherwise. I use Promax Extreme, Recovermax, Immune Support, Protrient, and GH Kick for pre season and to aid sleep and recovery.

What are your favourite Maximuscle products and why?

Promax Meal Bars as they are handy especially when I am feeling really lazy and can't be bothered to make a shake.

Finally, what tips would you pass on to our readers who are looking to achieve their sporting and physique goals?

Have a goal for a physique to achieve not purely physique itself otherwise you will never be satisfied. This is a healthy mind set to have too. Train for a reason, it is easier to maintain focus and motivation rather than just athletics.
