Caffeine: A healthy stimulant for brawn and brain

Muscle & Fitness reports on research showing that pre-workout caffeine can boost your performance in the gym, leading to faster gains in strength, size and endurance.

Rather than directly affecting the muscles themselves, caffeine affects the central nervous system (CNS) to “increase your pain threshold, so it’s easier to push through those final reps, extra sets and last treadmill interval.”

A study from researchers at University of Nebraska-Lincoln reports that “weight-trained subjects who took one dose of caffeine pre-workout increased their max bench press weight by about 5 pounds.

But an improvement in strength and endurance is not the only benefit of caffeine. Studies also show that it can accelerate the breakdown of stored fat (known as lipolysis), which is the first step to burning off the fat and revealing a leaner, more defined physique.

“So in effect, caffeine increases your fat-burning ability while it improves your workout performance,” says Jose Antonio, CEO of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.
