I have been running with a reasonably gentle, happy and non-competitive gait for the past ten years.  I got into running as part of an exercise plan to keep fit, alleviate stress and spend less time cooped up indoors in a gym.  Pretty much straight away I was seduced by the joy and freedom of running outside. Handling a very full-on job with long hours spent either in my office at a computer or worse under ground stuck on a tube – running presented me with the perfect opportunity to get outdoors in the sunshine (read: grey rain, mist and fog) flood my system with vitamin d and fresh air and exercise all at the same time – the perfect combination of a mental and physical workout

In the past ten years it’s fair to say – I haven’t pushed myself.  I’ve done a handful of 10k’s and four half marathons.  For the past three years I’ve revelled in my annual application to the London Marathon ballot – smugly telling family and friends how much I’d ‘love’ to do it – safe in the knowledge that ‘no one ever gets in through the ballot’.  I won’t lie – it was a big shock when I received my copy of Marathon News with CONGRATULATIONS written in bold on the front cover.  Now I actually have to prove to my nearest and dearest and more importantly, myself, that I can take part in an endurance event without flaking out halfway through, finishing in just under 24 hours or being beaten over the finish line by the two jokers in the donkey outfit. In this training diary I will be reporting on my progress, lack of progress, diet, general exercise plan with a healthy dose of sleepless nights and marathon anxiety – anyone else feeling scared?
