The best labs and testing

At Maximuscle, we have close partnerships with the best manufacturing plants in the industry. Our commitment includes testing the raw ingredients used in our products. We demand purity, authenticity and product origin certificates. Maximuscle regularly visits and audits its manufacturing plants to ensure compliance with the most relevant quality control standards in food and supplement manufacturing. Staff also undertake regular training to ensure these quality controls are followed.

Finished batches are independently tested at approved laboratories to ensure the macronutrient quantities (protein, carbohydrate and fat) are correct and that the contents listed on the label correspond to what's in the bottle. Every batch of every product undergoes microbiological tests because food safety is paramount.

Maximuscle holds certificates of conformity for all products to ensure that every batch of finished product can be traced back to the raw ingredients.

The Importance of Supplement Testing

It is well known that the supplement industry is synonymous with saying one thing and doing another. It is widely accepted (and in some cases proven) that companies who do not rigorously check and test their products through the proper channels cannot guarantee that they are providing products with the right ingredients, quality or amount.

This is something we at Maximuscle take very seriously indeed. That is why anyone choosing to use Maximuscle products can be assured that they’ve undergone rigorous quality testing, including an extensive drug screening programme, and that applies to every batch.

Maximuscle in fact helped these testing laboratories to develop this programme to meet the growing demand from athletes and coaches concerned about banned substances in sports, and to stop suppliers and manufacturers from misleading customers at every possible opportunity. After all it is someone’s health at risk, and putting foreign agents in to the body can have catastrophic effects.

We have drawn up an outline of the importance of drug screening, what to look out for when buying supplements, and how to ensure you are not harming yourself if you do take supplements.

The Top Tips To Ensure Your Supplement Quality

  • Ensure your products are tested
  • Ensure the test was in the last 3 months
  • Don’t be swayed by price
  • Consider your potential health implications
  • If unsure, check!

Q. What is drug screening in supplements?

A. You might have read in the press about a small number of athletes blaming contaminated supplements for their positive drugs test.

Although some of these claims have proven to be false , research has shown that some supplements have been found to be contaminated with low levels of steroids and/or stimulants. Even trace levels of contamination can have significant consequences and this requires a sensitivity of testing way beyond routine quality control systems.

This can present a problem to many elite athletes who want to use supplements to perform at their best but don’t want to take the risk of using a “contaminated” product.

Maximuscle’s drug screening programme involves testing each and every one of our supplements and/ or their ingredients for inadvertent contamination with substances prohibited by WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency. Testing is ISO17025 compliant as well as approved by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) and supported by a number of recognised sports bodies, including UK Sport and Informed-Sport.

In short, all our products undergo rigorous testing to provide the highest level of assurance that they are safe for competitive athletes to use.

Q. What if I use supplements that haven’t been through a drug screening programme?

A. There are two big risks associated with taking products that HAVEN’T been through the same extensive drug screening process that Maximuscle puts all its products through.

Firstly, if you’re a competitive athlete, you run the risk of testing positive for a banned substance, getting kicked out of your sport and having your reputation ruined. Only those products that have been tested using appropriately accredited methods (ISO17025), at the appropriate detection limits for the relevant substances, should be considered suitable for regular "drug-free" use.

What’s more, using products that haven’t been drug screened also presents a risk to your health. Although the contaminants detected in some supplements are present in relatively small amounts, when they’re consumed over a prolonged period of time, you have no idea what impact they’re having on your health. This applies to everyone who takes supplements, and without testing certification on every batch you can’t be sure of quality.

Q. How often should supplement drug tests be carried out?

A. If you want to guarantee safety, every batch of every product should be drug screened. At the very least, every three months a full test should be carried out. Most companies will turn their stock every ¼ if not less, so regular genuine random testing is key.

Unlike other companies who either do not test products or may only test a handful of their product range or carry out random tests on selected products, Maximuscle tests the entire range every time. The likely reason that many other companies do not regularly test their products is due to the cost incurred (and possible negative outcome) of doing so. However what price can you put on health and long term damage if you don’t do it? Screening every batch of every product does cost a lot more (roughly £10 per individual product), but it’s the only way to ensure that nothing can slip through the net.

If you want to succeed at the very highest level of athletic competition, or even if you’re someone who’s healthy and you want to stay that way, only a company that drug screens each and every batch can offer you the total protection that is required.
As Europe's largest and most popular sports nutrition company, Maximuscle supplies many of the biggest names in British sport, including The British & Irish Lions, England and Wales Cricket Board, Premiership football team Fulham FC, London Wasps RFC, as well as many other elite athletes and regular gym junkies in the UK and across Europe.

With this level of service comes an important responsibility to ensure all our products are manufactured to the highest standards. With every Maximuscle product you buy, you can be sure that what’s on the label is in the tub. Nothing more and nothing less .

Q. What is the cost of supplement Drug Testing?

A. The reality is it is very expensive to test every batch, and this is why many companies simply do not test their products. On average it adds around £10.00 per unit to the cost of a standard tub of product, but we at Maximuscle believe this is a very small price to pay for the surety of guaranteed quality, and the confidence in quality product.

At Maximuscle we understand the importance of knowing what you are consuming, and as a result we test every product. We DO NOT want to put anyone at any risk with our products, and the only way to be sure is to test them regularly. We can then also ensure that the right quality, quantity and nutritional value of our ingredients are in every tub you buy, a claim that very few can ever make!

Q. How can I check if/when my supplements were tested?

A. If you request the information from the manufacturer of the product, they must provide you with the complete testing documentation for your specific batch. Alternatively, you can find out who does their testing and refer to the tester’s website.
